Complications of cataract surgery
Most cataract operations are successful, but some complications require specialist retinal assessment or further surgery.
Possible symptoms
- Unexpectedly poor or worsening vision
- New flashes or floaters
- Pain or increasing redness
- Distortion, a shadow or loss of part of the visual field
Assessment
Assessment identifies the cause and may include OCT, retinal imaging or ultrasound. Problems can include retained lens material, retinal tears or detachment, macular swelling, infection or a displaced lens implant.
Treatment
Management is tailored to the cause. It may involve medication, laser, lens repositioning or exchange, or vitreoretinal surgery.
