Diabetic retinal disease
Diabetes can damage the small blood vessels of the retina. Changes may include diabetic retinopathy and swelling at the macula.
Possible symptoms
- Often no symptoms in the early stages
- Blurred or fluctuating vision
- Floaters from bleeding inside the eye
- Sudden or progressive loss of vision in advanced disease
Assessment
Dilated examination and retinal imaging, including OCT, help determine whether observation, injections, laser or surgery is appropriate.
Treatment
Good control of diabetes and blood pressure remains important. Eye treatment may include injections, laser or vitreoretinal surgery depending on the type and severity of disease.
