Patient information
Epiretinal membrane
An epiretinal membrane is a fine layer of scar-like tissue on the macula. As it contracts, it can wrinkle or distort the central retina.
Possible symptoms
- Distorted or wavy central vision
- Difficulty reading
- Blurred central vision
- Different image size between the eyes
Assessment
Examination and OCT scanning show the membrane and its effect on the macula.
Treatment
Mild symptoms may only require monitoring. When distortion or loss of vision is troublesome, vitrectomy with membrane peeling may be considered.
