Macular hole
A macular hole is a small opening in the central retina, the area responsible for reading and fine-detail vision.
Possible symptoms
- Blurred central vision
- Straight lines appearing bent or wavy
- Difficulty reading small print
- A central dark or missing spot
Assessment
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) provides a detailed scan of the macula and helps confirm the diagnosis and stage.
Treatment
Some early changes may be monitored. A full-thickness macular hole is usually treated with vitrectomy, removal of fine tissue at the macula and a gas bubble.
