Retinal detachment
A retinal detachment occurs when the light-sensitive retina separates from the tissues supporting it. It is sight-threatening and usually needs prompt treatment.
Possible symptoms
- A sudden increase in floaters
- Flashes of light
- A dark curtain or shadow in the vision
- Blurred or reduced peripheral vision
Assessment
The retina is examined after dilating the pupil. Additional imaging may be used when the view into the eye is limited.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the type and extent of the detachment. Options can include vitrectomy, a scleral buckle, a gas bubble, laser or freezing treatment.
